Official message from the President of the World Association for Development to mark the International Day of Older Persons

International Day of Older Persons: 1 October 2026

Living longer must also mean living better

Increased life expectancy is a step forward that requires us to fulfil our collective responsibility. For the World Association for Development, the extra years gained must be lived with dignity, security and independence. This ambition requires adapting health, social protection, employment, housing and transport systems, whilst preparing for ageing at every stage of life.

Every older person must be able to choose their place in society and their own pace of life. Continuing in employment must be a choice, not an obligation imposed by financial insecurity or the lack of an adequate pension. Ensuring adequate incomes, accessible care and opportunities for participation is essential to reducing inequalities and fully recognising older people as rights-holders and active contributors to development.

The AMD advocates an approach to longevity based on prevention, the continuity of rights and solidarity between generations. Recognising older people’s experience, preserving their freedom of choice and supporting their contribution to the community must guide collective action. Ensuring that additional years are years of opportunity and dignity is a requirement of sustainable development.
