Official message from the President of the World Association for Development to mark the International Day of Non-Violence
International Day of Non-Violence, 2 October 2026
Non-violence: preserving societies, protecting development
Defending one’s rights and combating injustice without provoking further violence is a force for social transformation. For the World Association for Development, this possibility requires credible channels through which people can make their voices heard, resolve disputes and obtain justice. Dialogue, mediation and citizen participation must enable disagreements to be resolved in a way that respects everyone’s dignity.
Violence can wipe out in a matter of moments the progress built up over many years. It disrupts essential services, destroys livelihoods, causes displacement and undermines trust between communities. Its consequences jeopardise development capacities far beyond the immediate conflict. Investing in prevention, education on non-violence and accessible institutions helps to safeguard these achievements.
The AMD advocates collective action that addresses injustices, protects freedoms and strengthens mechanisms for the peaceful resolution of disputes. This responsibility extends to digital spaces, where the prevention of hate must go hand in hand with respect for fundamental rights. Promoting non-violence means enabling societies to transform themselves whilst protecting lives and opportunities for development.
